Your birth story matters. Birth Trauma Resolution Services offer a safe, supportive space to process difficult or unexpected pregnancy, birth or postpartum experiences.

Forest Pathway Scene

Birth Trauma Resolution Therapy (BTR) is an extremely effective way of treating birth trauma and is accredited by the Royal College of Midwives. It helps to turn a traumatic memory into a normal memory, removing the traumatic and stress-inducing emotions attached to your experience. This will help you to remember your birth without the strong emotions.

Some of the impacts that you may experience following a traumatic perinatal experience include the following:

  • Intrusive, distressing memories of the perinatal journey

  • Nightmares

  • Flashbacks

  • Difficulty sleeping

  • Feeling detached

  • Irritability

  • Loss of interest

  • Self blame

  • Anxiety and feelings of panic

  • Overwhelm

  • Low mood

  • Upsetting intrusive thoughts

Birth Trauma Resolution Therapy is offered over 3-5 sessions, and includes an explanation of trauma, guided debriefing, and all necessary follow-up to ensure a successful transition.   â€‹

All services are provided by a licensed Registered Nurse with extensive experience in debriefing and the Listening Visits Model. It should be noted - Sabbath Schrader, RN is not a mental health therapist, but she is directly supervised as needed. She is trained in an intervention used in the UK that is specifically utilized by Registered Nurses and Midwives to assist with debriefing and processing traumatic birth events.

We strive for collaboration with your current mental health team, and will gladly provide notes, records, and nursing care plans. The scope of practice for these services is very specific to Birth Trauma, and all other concerns will be referred back to your mental health team. We are unable to safely process or debrief with those diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder or Schizophrenia. This is a cash pay only service offering, and cannot be billed to your insurance. You may, however, under certain circumstances utilize your FSA/HSA.

Session Plan

This is a sample of how sessions may unfold. Each person is unique, and each care plan is tailored to the needs of the individual. Trauma surrounding pregnancy, birth, postpartum, or the NICU may be felt by the pregnant person, or by their partner, family members, the Nurses or the Providers. This process can apply equally well for anyone that is showing signs of a traumatic response to events that have occurred in the perinatal period. It should be noted that at times, it may benefit the individual to have more than 3 sessions. But, most isolated trauma debriefing can occur in the sample session plan shown here.

1 / Intake Session

This initial intake visit covers a lot: intake information is gathered, an explanation of trauma and how it impacts the brain, establishing a baseline, debriefing the events, reassessing the baseline, processing using the Rewind Technique, assessment of the baseline for a final time, and then some after care to close the session. It's best to count on spending 90 minutes for this first session.

2 / Unpacking and Goal Setting Session

During this session, we assess how the time between sessions has unfolded, how the processing impacted the perception of the events, and discuss goal setting for steps to come after. For some, re-framing the events is the goal, for others it might be to improve bonding with baby, or even choosing to grow their family without fear.

3 / Writing the Next Chapter

Utilizing information gathered up to this point, the next step usually involves putting the old version of events on the shelf. Then, we can look ahead and incorporate a personalized guided meditation uniquely designed to move forward towards the new goals discussed in the previous session.
